This thesis describes the 5th FCI category, especially it’s subcategory of hounds. It focuses on the breed’s origin, history, importance, and evolution of the hunting dogs, the breeds, and their utilisation in hunting. It also describes the most used hounds in Slovak hunting, i.e. the Slovakian Hound, the Tatra Hound, the Alpine Dachsbracke, and the Styrian Coarse-haired Hound. The main focus is on the history of the hounds, their nature, behaviour, errors, and utilisation in the hunting practice. The results describe and display the progress of the hounds’ exams and their award prizes. The same description method was used for the progress and awarding in the pre-tests, forest tests of small breeds, bloodhound tests of small breeds and hounds in the 2014 – 2017. The results about the litter sizes and born puppies have been collected in a book of breeds in Bratislava. The numbers of born puppies were used as a foundation for creating the graph, which shows the increasing numbers of game. Therefore, the thesis concludes that the utilisation of hounds will grow in the future. In the following chapter, the thesis processes the results of the Slovak Hunting Union from the selected regions in 2015 - 2018. The average score has been calculated for the individual disciplines, and the best and worse grades are explained in the chapter. The results show that the best score has been reached in the categories of orientation, obedience, guiding, endurance, and behaviour around shot game. It seems necessary to improve the braveness of hounds. It has been found out that the number of hounds in Slovakia increases every year, which is also confirmed by the success of the local Tatra Hound breed. The breed is also improving in all disciplines and reaches high grades in performance. This breed has earned the love of multiple hunters and is becoming extremely popular.
