The diploma thesis deals with the issue of continental climate, in the conditions in which significant woods of the Western Carpathians grow. One hydric and three thermal indexes of continentality, calculated for the network of SHMU stations for the period from 1931 to 1960 were selected. Continuous surfaces were created from point data by applying spatial interpolation methods. From the comparison of the indexes among the five most important tree species we found, that forest trees such as pine and oak are much continental than spruce and fir. From the point of view of the comparison of the index within the five selected orographic units of Slovakia, the biggest differences in continentality were manifested by the increase of continentality from north-west to south-east Slovakia.
