The thesis focuses on western capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus), its ecology and biology of the species as a whole, and protection and management of the species in the territory of the Species Protected Area (herebe after “SPA“) Chočské vrchy. The thesis presents the results of long-term tracking and collection of data acquired from scientific literature, resulting in processed literary research dealing with morphology, ethology, ecology and protection of western capercaillie. The next part is a description and characteristic of the selected territory SPA Chočské vrchy. The research took place from February to April 2021 by the method of spring census of lekking cocks. I only fulfilled the first part of this method in an effort to find signs of occurrence in the snow and to locate lek territories. To my great disappointment, due to the absent signs of occurrence I could not continue on with the second part of this method, which consists of counting lekking cocks. That is why I focused on the assessment of biotope suitability in selected localities in the SPA. The population in the SPA Chočské vrchy has never been monitored in detail, but in spite of that, there are estimated amounts of game stated in hunting statistics. That is what I discuss comparing the current population status with the data collected in the past. The change in ecological conditions, which occurred after a destructive wind calamity in the majority of capercaillie inhabited locations in May 2014 had a negative effect on the population numbers and the amount of suitable biotopes. In the thesis I discuss the negative factors that are the reason for the decline and deteriorated population status in Europe. In the issue of improving the population status of western capercaillie in the SPA Chočské vrchy, there are processed proposals and measures of multiple authors along with my own, which could be used to achieve the recovery of the species into two specific ecologically-functional areas.
