HRUŠKA, ERIK: Influence of various substrates and cultivation methods on the growth of seedlings and nursery transplants of European beech (Diploma Thesis) - Technical University in Zvolen, Faculty of Forestry, Department of Forest Cultivation. The supervisor doc. Ing. Ivan Repáč PhD., Zvolen LF TU, 2021, 103 p. 13 attachments. The thesis states the evaluation of the influence of cultivation methods, substrates, and their mutual combinations (variants) on the development of biometric indicators of beech, such as the height of the above-ground part, root neck thickness, height gain, dry weight, as well as ectomycorrhea amount, etc. Findings are based on the performed experiment, which was carried out in the operating conditions of Jochy forest nursery during two growing periods. In the first growing period, seedlings were grown using three technologies, each in a different substratum. Four types of substrates were used: Durpeta B2, Kekkilä B6, Kekkilä C1, and mineral soil as a control. The chosen methods of cultivation included cultivation of containerized seedlings under the influence of polyethylene cover, cultivation of bare-rooted seedlings in uncovered seedbeds, and the cultivation of bare-rooted seedlings under the influence of a polyethylene cover. Under the conditions listed above, and by using the given techniques of cultivation with a selected type of substratum, we have created 10 unique combinations (variants) from these substrates and technologies. After the first growing season, 450 seedlings were taken for examination /or just “examined”. Basic biometric indicators, as well as mycorrhizal symbiosis, were evaluated. The remaining unevaluated seedlings were taken and manually replanted into the mineral soil, where they were grown as seedlings for one growing season (spring-autumn). After the growing season was finished, samples were taken again, this time from 300 two-year-old starched seedlings. For these seedlings, the same indicators as well as others were evaluated to assess the impact of technologies and substrates from the first growing season after subsequent replanting in the second growing season. Seedlings grown in peat substrates achieved higher biometric characteristics than seedlings from mineral soil. Conversely, the representation of ectomycosis on root systems was much greater in seedlings that were grown in mineral soil. It was unequivocally confirmed that seedlings that were grown in multipots had much more developed root systems but also other biometric characteristics. The replanting of seedlings had a positive effect on the amount of ectomycosis, particularly on seedlings that were previously grown in peat substrates.
