In the past couple of years, the honey bee (Apis mellifera) has been listed on the Red List of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It`s status is labeled "data defecient" and the Union requires further research to determine the existence, distribution and trends of wildlife colonies. No significant or continuous detection of the occurrence of unmanaged honeybees has been carried out in Slovakia so far. We started filling this gap, focusing on finding, documenting and monitoring their survival. At the same time, we performed testing of bee colonies in a forest environment, which lead us to the observation and evaluation of the survival of unmanaged swarms. The research also included the collection of samples for genetic testing aimed at determining the genetic structure of wild bee colonies. By analyzing the microsatellites of the tested samples, we found that they are not differentiated into several genetic groups. We identified eight haplotypes of group C. The obtained data about survival of the observed unmanaged honeybees shows that these colonies are unstable in population and are heading towards extinction. The most likely current reservoir of wild honeybee colonies in Slovakia are beekeepers.
