ZDECHOVANOVÁ, Barbora: What Do Women Consider Best in Their Obstetric Care? [Diploma Thesis]. Pan-European University in Bratislava. Faculty of Psychology. Department of General Psychology. Supervisor: Mgr. Katarína Greškovičová, PhD. Degree of Qualification: Master’s Degree (Mgr.). Bratislava 2018, 66 pages and 1 appendix. The main objective of this diploma thesis was to investigate what women consider best in their obstetric care. The analytical part of this thesis focused on women’s best three positive experiences with obstetric care as well as on their comments on their experiences receiving obstetric care in various Slovak hospitals. This research contains a secondary analysis of data gained from the database of the Babies Born Better international survey; a sample of 100 primigravidae (N=100) who had given birth in one of the hospitals in individual regions of Slovakia was chosen randomly. The participants in the sample were between 22 and 37 years of age. Data were collected via an online questionnaire available on the Internet between February 2014 and December 2015. Based on a preliminary analysis, several categories were formulated in order to be used for further analysis and comparison of the information obtained. The results were as follows: the most frequent responses as to women’s best positive experiences with obstetric care were the woman’s requests being honoured, expertise of staff, their humane approach, and the possibility for a partner or other familiar person to be present during childbirth. The results also showed that only a small number of primigravidae identified bonding as the first, second or third best positive experience. In the future, the findings of this research could be useful to the lay and professional public interested in obstetric care, but mainly as a memento, source of comments and suggestions to improve the quality of obstetric care provided.
