The topic of my master thesis is a multifunctional object at the corner of Dunajska and Lazaretska Streets located in the centre of the Dunajska zone in Bratislava. The estate belongs to the BISLA University, which the newly designed object follows in function and service. The aim was to create conditions for the university as it aims at expanding in the future by introducing a master degree of study, but primarily the aim was to create a city-centric living campus. Considering that the estate stretches almost 80 metres along Lazaretska Street and takes up a large part of the street, it was necessary to design its functions and create a parterre which would bring the street to life and help to use its potential. The main factor that had an impact on my design was the current state of the estate. It is largely used as a parking lot and its other half is on the other hand a green area used mostly by the university students. Therefore, my goal was to accentuate the green area, push it forward to the next level and diminish the number of cars in the area. My aim was to create as many exterior as well as interior premises as possible, for the students and the public to meet, network and thus support the community-like character of the Dunajska zone. The design consists of two matters: one that dominates the Lazaretska Street and the other, a smaller solitaire in the courtyard of the BISLA University. The original object situated in this particular courtyard was insufficient for the university needs and has therefore been replaced by a new object which fulfills the role of a multifunctional hall and schoolrooms. The matter of the main designed object itself is simple and holds the characteristic feature of multiple apertures and openings within the parterre. This concept comes from the original character of the streets in this zone, which were formed by rangy materials, entries to the courtyards and various functions they had to offer. Openings within the parterre widen the street, invite to inside premises and support the diversity of the street. Apertures are a reminiscence of the courtyards which used to have a major role in this particular part of the city, and now they are becoming public or private living rooms. The four-story object is divided into three units by two main staircases situated in the centre of the building; as for functionality, it is divided horizontally and vertically. Public citizen services are located at the two lower floors, and private, residential functions are located on the two upper floors. There is a smaller garden at the rooftop, which is followed by a bistro and culinary school at the parterre. Beside that there is a bookshop with a cafe in the parterre. Lazaretska Street is interconnected with the BISLA courtyard by an underpass; the BISLA courtyard is where the other object with a multifunctional hall is situated, which could also be used also for extracurricural activities. Library and study are located on the second floor, as well as rentable office spaces, which continue to the third floor. The rest of the function is covered by dormitory and hostel. Entry to respective premises is ensured through the staircases where all other functions are merged and interconnected. Apertures, windows and galleries play a crucial role, since they offer vistas and thus connect the user with the exterior as well as other interior spaces.
