Electric guitar is one of the most used musical instrument in the world. Its production is closely linked to well-known wood processing technologies used in the wood industry. In the wood engineering, the production of electric guitar represents the top of the knowledge for woodworking with several types of wood. Diploma thesis focuses on the examination of the characteristics of wood, named as “Figured wood” which is characteristic with its specific and aesthetical interesting texture. Its grains are creating the non-traditional patterns in the wood surface. These patterns are created by the native properties of wood and by using an appropriate wood cut scheme of the valuable material for production of musical instrument, especially as the electric guitar is. We determined and compared the physical and acoustical characteristics of domestic and exotic wood species by experimental measuring with non-destructive method of acoustic – method of modal analysis for harmonic excitation using the Chladni patterns (apparatus VIBROVIZER). The Figured wood which characteristics were experimentally observed, showed the wide range of values of relevant physical-acoustical characteristics of wood according to regions, wood cut and also according to part of guitar. It is important to remind that the subjective opinion of the customer and the opinion of the guitar producer based on the determining factors are still the essential criteria in the choice of the wood for electric guitar.
