The aim of the bachelor thesis is to evaluate the status and abundance of brown bear (Ursus arctos) in the Slovak republic with a focus on a selected area of Kremnické vrchy. We have become acquainted with the biology, ethology and ecology of the largest beast of the territory and with the relevant bear monitoring methodologies. According to data from hunting statistical yearbooks, the abundance of bears throughout Slovakia was evaluated. Subsequently, according to the data found, we evaluated the favourable conditions of bears in selected localities within the University Forest Enterprise in Zvolen.Selected chapters describe the anatomy and body measurements of bears, the way of its life, food ecology, bears with synanthropic behaviour, the distribution of brown bear in Slovakia, in the world and its habitat and the environment in which it occurs. We have also described predators and competitive relationships regarding the area and food. Within the framework of monitoring, we have become familiar with individual methods.The monitored sites are the hunting district of the University Forest Enterprise of the Technical University in Zvolen and the hunting district of Makovisko. At individual sites we evaluate whether the status of bears in 2018 is favourable according to the estimated abundance, density, and sexual and age structure. Then we compare the individual sites with each other. We also evaluated the course of population abundance within Slovakia, the damage caused by brown bear and its loss in the last 10 years. We evaluated the population trend and the development of abundance in areas over the last four years from 2015 to 2018.
