The diploma thesis deals with the issue of flood protection in connection with the assessment of the river basin and the current flow capacity of the flow profiles and bridge objects of the Handlovka watercourse in the town of Prievidza. The framework for examining my diploma work included 10 cross sections at Handlovka. Specifically 6 profiles of cross bridges in the town of Prievidza, and 4 cross-natural profiles of the river Handlovka. Handlovka springs in the Vtáčnik mountain under the Biely Kameň hill (1135 m asl) and its length is 30.55 km. The catchment area includes 178.3 km2. Part of the thesis is a proposal of amelioration measures in the catchment area and in the watercourse of Handlovka mainly on forestland. The causes of floods are mainly related to the sudden intense rainfall in the catchment area, which creates conditions for the formation of so-called suddenly floods. Floods are almost impossible to prevent, so they can only mitigate the damage caused by them, so the issue of flood protection will always be up to date. The result of the work should be framework proposals for flood protection measures.
