Rare animal species, including chamois, are included in a group of animals that are specially protected. On the territory of Slovakia, chamois is the native species in the Tatra National Park (TANAP) in the High, Western and Belianske Tatras. In the case of the extinction of the Tatra chamois, a substitute population has been established outside the area of its autochthonous distribution, in the central part of the Low Tatras National Park. The main concern of protecting this rare subspecies is to protect its habitat from negative anthropic, anthropogenic and natural influences and to preserve its genetic identity. At the end of the 1990s, the number of chamois fell to two hundred. Thanks to the measures - by supplying salt, by feeding the jarabina at a time of food insecurity and by regular inspections by the land managers, their numbers gradually increased again to the limit of a thousand individuals. According to the results of the stone inventory, which took place in the territory of the Tatra National Park in June 2017, a total of 1,042 chamois was counted on both sides of the Tatier, of which 138 were this year's youngsters. In the Slovak part of the national park, 746 chamois chums were recorded in censuses, of which 91 were offspring. The dynamics of the chamois population are closely related to the external environment, i. vegetation and factors of the alpine environment (type of relief, subsoil, presence of rock formations, etc.), which act on the development of chamois. Most are the factors naturally occurring in the camp site. These are mainly climatic factors - the height of the snow cover, the predators, but also the factors that resonate with the term high mountain recreation. Whether hiking or cross-country skiing, mountaineering and other activities in an alpine environment all can disturb the healthy development of the chamois population.
