Scientific literature predicts that the oldest hunting dog breeds are hounds. Later on, Central European and Western European species of dogs were breeded, such as scent hounds or dachshunds. The first main aim of the bachelor thesis is a theoretical definition of the topic from the point of view of history and development of hounds, division of hounds according to their origin and training which is closely connected with the hunting exams of hounds. In the second part of the thesis, there is a summary of the most preferred purebred breed of hounds which are used in hunting in Slovakia. From the breeding book written by the association SPZ (Slovak breeding book of hunting dogs – SPSK) we have chosen the overview from the last five years. In the tables provided, the number of puppies of the breed is stated as well as the import and export of these dogs. Moreover, the breeds are divided according to the sex. Last but not least, we are focusing on the effective rearing and usage of hound breeds in Slovakia in the future.
