Forest ecosystems belongs to the most important ecosystems in the world. Forests fulfill various functions important in the formation and protection of particular components of the environment. They are the producers of the most important renewable raw material – wood. Nowadays, forests are no longer perceived by society as only wood producers, they are perceived as providers of wide range of various other functions. One of the most important non-production functions of forest is the hunting function. Hunting has long tradition in Slovakia. One of the main objectives of hunting is to maintain the abundance of game at the optimal level in environment. The optimal abundance is known as the standardized stocks of game. The standardized stock of game are directly related to the quality of the habitat. To determine the quality of the habitat, it would be possible to use the decision support system, which allows to include in the process different variables that are not commonly used, but they could improve and clarify the determination of habitat quality. Decision support systems can predict the development of forest stands with different forest management regimes. Consequently, we can examine their impact on habitat viability. The aim of this work was to evaluate the possibility of determining the carrying capacity of forest stands for red deer in forest unit Očová through decision support system and to design the options for evaluation of hunting forest function by determining the carrying capacity based on the actual tree species composition of forest stands. The results of the work showed the existence of difference between the determination of carrying capacity of forest stands on the basis of typological unit (SLT) comparing with the actual tree species composition.
