As a member of the European Union, Slovakia has been obliged since 2004 according to the Habitats Directive to monitor, evaluate, and report information on the state of protection of protected species, including the lynx. However, the information and data reported by the European Commission for the period 2007-2012 were not based on robust and systematic monitoring, but on „the scientific estimates". In addition, systematic research has shown that data of lynx populations reported in the Green Report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Slovak Republic are 6-7 times overestimated and estimates of over 1,000 individuals are irrelevant. However, this information has been overlooked by the state administration for a long time, which results in the presentation of scientifically unsubstantiated information in the interpretation of the status and size of the lynx population, as well as its impact on ratite populations. The current state of ratite populations is causing increasing economic impact on forests and agricultural crops. Available data suggest that the management of ratites is not sufficiently effective in reducing negative economic impact and therefore, it is necessary to reassess natural regulatory factors such as large carnivores. However, misunderstandings about the interpretation of the state of the lynx population lead to conflicts between this species and human interests, resulting in illegal lynx hunting to the extent, despite 20 years of passive protection, its state does not reach the tolerable level of the environment. For this reason, the potential natural reduction of negative economic impact is also considerably limited. Management, as well as the protection of species, should be always based on relevant data of their status. However, such data can only be obtained through systematic monitoring. Therefore, the results of this work provide a basis for the evaluation of mutual influences within the trophic cascade (large carnivores – ratites - damage of forest stands) in the Vtáčnik stands and their potential development in the future.
