We compile the theory on the general characteristics of owls in the global perspective and define in more detail selected species of owls, in particular Bubo bubo, Strix uralensis, S. aluco, Asio otus, Aegolius funereus and Glaucidium passerinum. We assess our data, obtained by accustic monithoring method, focused on the identification of owl territories based on their accustic presence. The study was conducted in the the territory of the Muránska planina National Park, within ten individual research areas. We assume that the selected territory represent habitat to altogether six distinct species. We also recorded the population density of individual species, we identified environmental parameters inluencing their abundance, and recorded the peak of acustic activity during the night period. Impact of the old forest area on the number of owl territories was confirmed only for the species Strix aluco. Based on our data, we assume that the distribution of owls is limited mainly by the age and structure of forest stand.
