When designing the dowel joints according toEurocode 5, there are general rules valid for various types of tree species used in construction. Spruce wood is the most often used tree species. Beech wood is considered a strategic raw material in building constructions. In the case of joints of beech wood, experimental verification of relations according to EC5 must be performed. The specimens (beech, spruce and spruce degraded – SR) were tested according to the standard STN EN 383. The properties such as – joint wall strength (fh,k), wood density () when the diameter of the steel dowel was ø 5 mm, were determined. In total, 6 sets were tested (3 parallel to the grain direction and 3 perpendicular to the grain direction). The results were evaluated using mathematical and statistical methods and were compared to the values according to Eurocode 5. In the case of beech wood parallel to the grain direction according to EC 5, the values of joint wall strength (fh,k) are underevaluated by 16.5% (10.0 N/mm2). In the case of spruce wood (degraded as well), the differences between experiments and EC 5 are significantly lower.
