KAČIC, Lukáš: Determination of the influence of flame retardants on the formation of volatile products in the thermal degradation of natural polymers (diploma thesis), Technical University in Zvolen, Faculty of Wood Technology, Department of Fire Protection and Safety. Thesis supervisor: Ing. Veronika Veľková, PhD., Zvolen 2021. The subject of the diploma thesis is the determination of volatile products arising from the thermal degradation of natural polymers treated with flame retardants. The main goal of this work is to evaluate the influence of fire-retardant treatment of selected types of wood materials on the formation of volatile products and changes in properties under thermal stress. Research and experiments of various authors were used and based on their results, selected properties of materials were analyzed and evaluated. Selected wooden materials (Japanese red pine, radiata pine and pine) were treated with retardant coatings (using Synto Flame, Zero Flame, 30% and 50% sodium silicate with additives) and then analyzed in order to compare the released number of volatile products and fire technical properties (like ignition time, HRR, ignition temperature) and overall comparison of treated versus untreated selected wood materials. Based on experiments, results were obtained that indicate significantly better fire performance of wood materials treated with flame retardants. Flame retardants had a large impact on the release of volatile products (like CO, HCN, NH3, SO2), whose values decreased significantly because the treated sample did not ignite. Other volatile products were also compared, in which the released amount depended on the chemical composition of the flame retardant, on the basis of which we can say that these results do not depend directly on the type of wood material but on the type of retardation and precision must be taken into account. Wood is one of the most widely used types of interior and exterior materials and releases dense smoke, high temperatures and toxic volatile products (harmful to health) in fire conditions, thus it’s limiting people and making it more difficult to evacuate, as well as the fire and rescue operation. That is why fire-retardant coatings are used, they reduce the production of smoke, reduce the release of heat and volatile products, or completely prevent ignition in order to simplify the intervention.
