Forest policy in Slovakia has been trying to secure optimal provision of all forest ecosystem services for different population groups. Starting from this point, the aim of the study is a complex evaluation of selected instruments using policy implementation and evaluation analysis. As a basis for the evaluation, we proposed a subset of criteria derived from relevant theories, which are: the theory of ecosystem services and payments for ecosystem services (PES), policy analysis and governance. The analysed economic instruments were: i) Land tax relief for owners of protected and special purpose forests; ii) Refunds on ownership rights restrictions due to nature protection/conservation; iii) Forestry support for non-provisioning ecosystem services; iiii) European subsidies. The methodologically the study is based on social science research methods, with an emphasis on primary and secondary document analysis complemented by face to face interviews with relevant stakeholders. All considered instruments could be characterised as public PES like schemes to support forest ecosystem services with moderate overall effectiveness. The results of the evaluation reveal interesting findings about the implementation process of selected instruments, as well the minor implementation gaps in case of implementation of land tax relief and major ones in case of other instruments. The recommendations towards future implementation of evaluated instruments are introduced in the last part of the study.
