Monitoring lynx (Lynx lynx L.) using camera traps is the main method used to access population estimations all over their range. This work focus on the estimation of abundance and population density of lynx. Monitored area (294.75km2) was located in part of the Western Carpathians within the Vepor Mountains. Systematic monitoring using camera traps was realized in the winter season 2018/2019. Camera traps were active for 60 days and during this time, eight lynx were identified. Within the camera trap records 12 other species of wild mammals, two species of birds, a domestic dog, humans and three different human activities were recorded. In order to represent the spatial demands and average size of the home range of lynx, an area with a radius of 14 km was added to the monitored area. Total area (monitored area + radius) comprehends a size of 1,746 km2 from which 1,485 km2 is a suitable habitat for lynx. Results, using Spatial-Capture-Recapture methods, showed an estimation of 17.8 (± 7.3 ) lynx, which represents a population density of 1.20 (± 0.49) lynx per 100 km2 within suitable habitat. The estimated population density corresponds to the favorable status of this species according to the NATURA 2000 Care Program in Slovakia. With the records from the camera traps, we evaluate all species spectrum, their spatial distribution and frequency of occurrence.
