I have decided to design the gallery of modern arts foremost because of nearly boundless possibilities of architectural form and operational solutions of the building, but also because of the possibility of creative solutions of the quality of illumination of the exhibition spaces. Another functional purposes of the designed object are restaurant, coffeehouse and gift shop. The build site where the gallery is supposed to be built is situated in a likeable location of Štrkovec lake in Ružinov neighbourhood of Bratislava. Nowadays this site serves as a parking lot used by local residents and visitors of Štrkovec lake as well as exercise ground for driving schools. Prevailing functions in vicinity are apartment blocks and civic amenities in form of several educational institutions. The lake itself could be incorporated as a recreation area for leisure and sport, considering this area is filled with amount of small and middle sized vegetation. My goal was to naturally incorporate the design into the existing environment and bring it together with natural elements of the surroundings. As I perceived the lake to be the most significant potential of the area, my design solution was in the end inspired by the wooden pier on the lake bank. The gallery is divided into four units composed of one and two storey pavilions. These units are divided by indentations (skylights) letting through the indirect sunlight to the gallery spaces. Each pavilion has a specific function. Firstly, from the entrance unit it is possible to enter the restaurant section composed of coffeehouse and restaurant. Secondly it is possible to enter the two remaining pavilions serving as exposition spaces. The offices are located on the second floor. The pavilions' height allows the expositions of very large pieces of art. The aim was to create a natural unit of the gallery complex so that it fits within existing environment using comfortable dimensions and dynamic shapes of the building and interconnecting the existing pedestrian paths with the operation of the gallery and also with the lake bank. I tried to achieve this using the footbridge that goes from nearby garages through the gallery complex to the lake.
