The main effort of this project is the reintegration of the former orphanage designed by architect Dusan Jurkovic back into the living organism of the city. This object has an ambition to apply for registration as a part of the national cultural heritage; therefore it was necessary to reckon with this fact throughout whole conception of the project. The aim of the project was not only the reconstruction itself, but also to apply all possible principes of ecological and energy-efficient designing which are allowed in monumental reconstructions. Whole searching for the optimal solution is based on a simple but complex scheme. This scheme is the definition of what actually represents the 'architectural environment'. This definition indicates that the environment is a synthesis of its three basic aspects -- cultural environment, physical environment and social environment. These three aspects are mutually intertwined; they mutually interact and build on one another. I decided to apply this logic in all of conceptual solutions I used in this particular project. The cultural environment in this case means the heritage protection, ie objects that represent a certain cultural value. The Physical environment represents the ecological concept, which must be designed in a way that doesn't attack the cultural values. I was looking for a way to overlap the monumental protection with energy-efficient requirements. Social environment represents the functional proposal. Searching of the suitable function must respond to the two above mentioned aspects. Cultural values create demand for such functions which allow presenting these values . On the other hand, energetical characteristics very clearly define the boundaries of the optimal functional use. I was following this scheme thourough both phases of the project - Urban, and architectural. The final layout consists of a complex of three objects. These three different objects represent three different historical values, three different energetical categories and three different functions. All this was reflected in three different architectural solutions, which together form one harmonious architectural ensemble. The first object is the object of the former orphanage designed by Dusan Jurkovic, which presents the highest historical value, therefore I entered to its fundaments by minimal interventions . Thus, the object has the highest thermal demands and the selected functions combine low thermal demands and a presentation of cultural value. It is the function of museum and public spaces for the community center. The second is an object of the original baroque mill that is currently significantly damaged and therefore needed a greater degree of intervention. After these interventions the mill can achieve a low-energy building standard and can serve for such functions as creative part of the community center with workshop rooms and administrative equipment. The last object is a new building in a place of the defunct mill , which was proposed in completely passive standard and therefore the functions with high standard were placed into this space, such as a café and bookstore.
