Our bachelor thesis presents a brief description of history of wooden shingles in Slovakia and in the world. In the first part we described ways of choosing suitable plants for their production and their characteristics. We tried to clarify technological processes of wooden shingles production by slitting and splitting. We described factors affection the wood lifeline, constructional protection of wood and chemical protection of wood. In the next part we did research of samples from selected historical objects. The samples were taken from the Roman Catholic Church St. Catherine in Handlová, the water mill in Kolárovo, the blacksmithery with water mill in Medzev, the Augustusś House in Banská Štiavnica. The samples were researched by electron microscope Tescan Vega. The samples were from spruce and larch. On surface of wooden shingles were observed tar, oil stains and water soluble stains (used in exterior). The samples exposed to exterior conditions for several years. We can find out quality of surface. All samples were degrading they were attacked by different species of fungi which were spotted. On the surfacethere were powdery of particles, disputes of fungi and lichens on several samples. On the samples there were by created cracks in the coating, early and late wood erosion, coating degradation and degrading of wood structure by biotic factors.
