The objective of this thesis is an automation of network device provisioning. The provisioning is a time-consuming process and requires a networking expert to be performed. The automation reduces the provisioning duration, minimizes the possibility of an error in configuration, and eliminates the need for the networking expert’s presence, which reduces the operational costs of a company. The thesis describes the details of a provisioning process, and possible provisioning automation and orchestration options. The solutions of the two clients’ automation projects depict and explain Cisco Network Plug and Play (PnP) process. Cisco Network PnP utilizes products Cisco APIC-EM and Cisco Prime Infrastructure to apply a pre-prepared configuration to a network device. The solution exploits REST API of both Cisco products for automation and orchestration of creating the configurations for individual network devices. Main motivation for this thesis was the first project. The first project revolves around replacement of 63 networking devices of Cisco ISR4331 model and 3 Cisco ISR4221 models at client’s individual branch offices. The result of the solution is elimination of a networking expert’s presence at the site, and the reduction of the provisioning time to 10-17 minutes. It also allows for a parallel provisioning of multiple devices, and disencumbers the networking experts by automating the routine processes.
