The subject of the dissertation thesis is outlining of the strategic process that would lead to establishment of urban design strategy on the citywide level that would ensure the best possible quality of public space of our cities.It presents key theoretical research findings in the field of urban planning and design, which represent fundament of current international discourse and incorporates them into the context of system theory. This allows for their clear structuring.It then presents the basic contours of the strategic process that can be observed in the field of urban planning and design at the level of the European Union and Great Britain. Partial conclusions point to the fact that both levels correlate with the current discourse.Thereafter it analyses the process of urban planning and design in our country. On the basis of relevant documents analysis at the state and chosen city level it states that the current world discourse has not yet found a response in our country.The result of the dissertation is the recommendation to clearly and comprehensively define our society requirements concerning the city as well as its public space. Then it will be possible to determine if and how the findings and recommendations of the current world discourse can be used in the development of national and local strategies in this area.
