The diploma thesis focuses on the present state of the solution of flood protection in the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic. Its content is the definition of basic concepts in the context of legislation in force in both republics, characteristics and types of flood, level of flood action, measures taken before flood, during floods and floods. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the flood situation and protection in the interest area of the Handlovka water flow flowing through the town of Prievidza. The analysis consists of a description and analysis of the course of floods in August 2010. It compares the system of the measures proposed at the time of the actual events and the current state of flood protection of the city of Prievidza. Highlighted are the measures taken immediately by the municipality of Prievidza to prevent, respectively mitigating the adverse impacts of floods. The design of flood protection is aimed at the use of voluntary fire brigades, their material-technical equipment, members' expertise and accessibility. It is undeniable that voluntary firefighting is an indispensable part of the integrated rescue system in the Slovak Republic, with the fact that volunteers can intervene in large numbers.
