This work focuses on the issue of avalanches and anti-avalanche protection as an integrated part of forest melioration in natural conditions of the Slovak Republic. It briefly characterizes avalanches and causes of their formation. The work contains analyses of avalanche accidents in the High and Western Tatras, according to data from the Avalanche Prevention Center in Liptovský Hrádok, in the period from 1916 to 2016. In the analyzed period, there were 165 avalanches, which were evaluated from various aspects. 201 people were killed, another 140 suffered injuries of different character and severity. In this work, we have briefly suggested the nature-close means of anti-avalanche protection of forestry character.
