At present, great emphasis is placed on the technical equipment of fire and rescue units. Members of these units must be fully prepared to use their equipment. The aim of our thesis is to improve the organization of flood protection in the territory of Čadca district through the deployment of forces and resources of flood control, focused on the volunteer fire brigades. To meet the goals, we have to characterize the threatened territory and determine the size of the risk, which represents a significant but acceptable risk in the area. Based on the identification of the threatened territory we designed a teaching and training program for a chosen volunteer fire brigade in the district of Čadca. The program lasted six weeks and we tested the effectivity by questionnaire and by a training. In the chosen volunteer fire brigade, we noticed a significant improvement of their knowledge and readiness in the field of flood protection after the training. Another contribution of our work is a specific design of a patrol service set up by the members of the volunteer fire brigade, which will inform the members in time about the state of emergency. Using the patrol service should eliminate the time losses in the brigade and could lower the time needed to be ready to make any intervention.
