Timber construction of last decades are made mostly of spruce wood. Deficiency of quality spruce timber requires the usage of alternative wood species, including beech wood (Fagus Sylvatica L.). Application of beech structural timber in construction is contingent upon its verification and implementation in standards. The main goal of this dissertation thesis was verification of beech timber properties by different testing methods. Beech wood used in research were harvested in central Slovakia. Test samples with construction dimensions (150/50 × 3000 mm, n = 52) were tested by destructive bending method according to standard STN EN 408+A1. Characteristic values of modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity in bending, sheer modulus and density has been calculated according to standards STN EN 14 358 (2016) and STN EN 384 (2017). The results were evaluated and compared with the characteristic values of deciduous trees strength classes according to standard STN EN 338 (2016). Two non-destructive acoustic methods of timber grading were applied in experiments. Regression model of deciduous wood species strength classes was designed. Tested structural timber was graded as the D strength class according to designed model. All of the tested samples were graded as high quality timber into D40 or higher classes. It is assumed that grading was affected by quality selection criteria of test material.
